Amiga History
My first Amiga was an A600 wild, weird, wicked bundle, and a Quickshot Python joystick.
We used the Amiga for everything from word processing to games. My favourite game at the time was Frontier: Elite 2. I would play this game every day after school, despite the experience being less than ideal on a stock A600. I later came to enjoy the sequel First Encounters and still often play the modern version Elite Dangerous mostly on VR.
The Secret of Monkey Island came a close second. I remember the graphics being amazing and the storyline was funny and exciting. Despite having completed the game several times I would get completely lost if I were to play again today!
The Amiga sadly would soon end up in the loft once the Windows 95 PC arrived shortly after the release of Windows 98 (we were always several steps behind current technology!) where it remained until 2019. I had seen an advert for the Norwich Amiga Group on Facebook, and sheepishly attended one of their events which rekindled my interest in the platform.
I still have the A600 mostly unmodified alongside an A500 which I have customised and replaced the CPU with a PiStorm, and an A1200 with an Apollo accelerator. They spend their days in bits, and usually don't spend more than an hour working without problems, but I love them and will continue to do so for many years to come.
What Does The Hobby Mean To Me?
I have attended almost every event since I joined in 2019, and have met some remarkable people along the way, some of which I would hope to call my friends. It's been great to spend time with a lot of likeminded individuals who share a passion for what is probably quite a niche thing these days. I believe this to be the best part of the hobby for me, enjoying the time I spend with the local community, and interacting with the international fandom. It keeps me busy, and highly entertained.
